There’s a particular kind of magic in Providence when the leaves turn: brick sidewalks, quiet galleries, and the sense that creativity hums through our little city. It’s the perfect season to plan a weekend around on of my favorite annual shows: the Little Pictures Show & Sale at the Providence Art Club

Little Pictures Show & Sale — A Beloved Tradition (Since 1904)
First mounted in 1904, the Providence Art Club’s Little Pictures Show & Sale is the oldest and largest exhibition of its kind in the United States. This year marks its 121st edition, spread across three gallery spaces at the Club’s historic Thomas Street location.
Scale & access: 700+ original works, all 16" x 16" or smaller and priced $350 or less.
Artists: 120+ local artists across painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, jewelry, glass, and fine woodworking.
Take it home today: Purchased works leave with you immediately; new pieces are added daily, so the show constantly evolves.
It’s an approachable, joyful way to collect art (or find a singular gift). The vibe is warm and unpretentious—more like a neighborhood gathering — and a perfect introduction to one of the country’s oldest arts organizations.
RISD Museum — The Blue Gallery (Daphne Farago Wing)
A short walk away, the RISD Museum offers a counterpoint of scale and serenity. Make time for the Blue Gallery in the Daphne Farago Wing which houses a significant collection of European paintings. Don't miss the work of Dale Chihuly (a RISD alumn) and Buddha Mahavairocana (Dainichi Nyorai), one of the largest Buddha sculptures in the United States.
Eat, Stroll, Stay
Coffee & bites: Small Point Café (casual), Bolt at RISD (on-museum caffeine).
Dinner: New Rivers or Persimmon—chef-owned, seasonal, quietly elegant.
Stay: The Dean Hotel—design-forward, walkable to RISD, Westminster, and Waterplace Park.
Strolls: Benefit Street’s Mile of History; riverside paths at Waterplace.
Plan Your Trip Now
It’s the rare combination of authentic local art at a collectible scale; support working artists while bringing something meaningful home. Pairing it with RISD turns a weekend or day trip into a whole mood: discovery, reflection, and a little holiday-season magic.
